Space Exploration Activities for Students: Projects That Are Out of This World

Students choose from 16 significant space missions — from Sputnik to the James Webb Space Telescope — and create a detailed, visually appealing poster about their assigned mission.

With editable direction sheets, a clear grading rubric, and research websites included, students will develop research, critical thinking, and presentation skills while diving into real-world space history. You can easily adapt the project for independent work, pairs, or small groups depending on your classroom needs.

Design a Mars Rover STEM Activity

Bring the excitement of engineering and design into your space science lessons with the Mars Rover STEM Project. In this creative challenge, students build a manned Mars rover using 77 provided clipart images, or by designing their own parts (I typically provide magazines for them to cut apart). Then, they must explain how their rover survives the harsh conditions of Mars and collects scientific data.

Mars Exploration Booklet Project

If you’re looking for a no-prep, creative way to wrap up your space unit, the Mars Exploration Booklet Activity is a perfect choice. In this project, students create their own informational booklet about Mars and the many missions that have explored it — all using just a few sheets of paper and the provided research resources.

Students will learn about Mars facts, historic and modern landers and rovers, and even design their own rover prototype. It’s a great way to build science literacy while encouraging creativity and independent research — plus, the final booklets make a great classroom display!
