Mars Rover Stem Project: Design and Create a Rover to Explore and Study the Planet Mars

Mission Objective

In this Mars rover STEM project, students will follow the mission directives to design and engineer a manned rover with scientific instruments that can withstand Mar’s environment and protect the explorer during the study of the planet.

Students will choose from the 77 clipart parts and instruments, draw new parts, and have the option of cutting out more parts from old magazines to complete their custom rover. Then they will answer questions to describe how their rover allows safe exploration through the Mars environment and how their rover collects scientific data from Mars. They will have clear directions and rubric to guide them independently on their way to invention.

You provide the students with the handout and the provided 77 high quality clipart images, and they will create an awesome custom rover, complete with scientific instruments used to study and collect data on the planet Mars.

Students will design and build the rover, design and build scientific instruments on the rover, and answer 5 mission follow-up questions. Students are provided background information, clear directions and requirements, and even a detailed rubric.
