Modeling Types of Clouds Lab

In this modeling types of clouds lab, students create a beautiful model poster of ten major cloud types using cotton, glue, and construction paper. This is one of my favorite Earth science labs as it incorporates science, engineering, creativity, and critical thinking skills. Students love it too!

Fun and hands-on practice. This activity effectively teaches students identify different cloud types and describe their characteristics and weather that go with each cloud! Students model ten different clouds at different altitudes using cotton, glue, and construction paper. Includes editable student directions sheet with rubric, 2-page reference sheet, student examples, and a lesson plan.

Modeling Types of Clouds Lab Includes:

• Teacher Lesson Plan and Guide: A one-page lesson plan with standards, warm-up, teacher tips, and assessment suggestions are included to make this lesson literally a breeze!

• Modeling Types of Clouds Lab Student Handout and Rubric: Your download includes to follow step-by-step directions on how to set up and model cloud types at different altitudes, label each cloud, and write the weather associated with each cloud. Student are then asked to shade in and draw lightning or rain for specific clouds. Includes a grading rubric where students can self-grade or you can use to grade the student’s work. This activity works individually or up to three or four students in a group.

• Cloud Types and Weather Reference Sheets: You will recieve a clouds and weather data table, finished diagram of the ten types of clouds, and student examples of the finished model. Also included, for further scaffolding, are links and QR codes to reputable websites about types of clouds and weather.

Materials Per Group of Students:

• Blue or white large construction paper
• White glue
• Cotton balls (about 20 per group)
• Gray markers, pencils, or paint to shade in specific clouds
