Description

Bring the rock cycle to life with this hands-on Rock Cycle Lab with Airheads Candy! This is more than a “squish some candy and call it a rock” activity. Students use Airheads to model real geologic processes including weathering, erosion, deposition, compaction, heat and pressure, melting, cooling, and solidification.

Using simple classroom materials, students model the formation of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks while identifying the processes represented, comparing changes in the candy, and evaluating the strengths and limitations of the model.

This editable rock cycle candy lab also reinforces that rocks can follow many different pathways rather than moving through one fixed sequence.

By the end of the lab, students will have modeled rock cycle processes, explained how the three major rock types form, completed a nonlinear rock cycle diagram, and evaluated the candy model through a scaffolded CER activity.

This Candy Rock Cycle Lab Activity Includes:

  • Teacher Guide: A detailed teacher overview with pacing suggestions, NGSS connections, materials, grading suggestions, lab tips, safety guidance, and step-by-step directions for running the investigation (3 pages).

  • Student Rock Cycle Lab Handout: A visually scaffolded, step-by-step editable investigation where students use Airheads candy to model sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rock formation before continuing the cycle through weathering and erosion (2 pages).

  • Analysis Questions: Structured analysis questions help students connect each action in the candy model to the geologic process it represents and explain how real rocks form (2 pages).

  • Rock Cycle Diagram: Students use observations from their candy model to illustrate different stages of the rock cycle and identify the processes that transform one material or rock type into another in this rock cycle graphic organizer.

  • Rock Cycle CER: Students evaluate how accurately the Airheads model represents real rock cycle processes, identify strengths and limitations of the model, and construct an evidence-based CER response (1 page).

  • Step-by-Step Presentation: A student-friendly rock cycle presentation includes safety expectations, short rock-type reviews, visual procedure slides, a rock cycle word bank, and support for guiding students through each stage of the investigation (12 slides).

  • Editable (PowerPoint), printable (PDF), and digital (Google Slides) versions are all included!

Materials are simple—all you need are airheads, scissors, foil, a hot plate, and plastic baggie. If you choose not to use a hotplate, this resource is editable to meet your needs.

Why teachers love this Candy Rock Cycle Lab:

  • Designed for secondary science: This is more than a simple candy demonstration. Students analyze geologic processes, complete a nonlinear rock cycle model, and evaluate the strengths and limitations of the investigation through a scaffolded CER.

  • Airheads make the modeling clearer and more affordable: Their flat, flexible shape makes layering, compression, folding, and deformation easy to see, while also offering a budget-friendly alternative to the classic Starburst lab.

  • Highly visual and hands-on: Students physically model sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rock formation, making abstract rock cycle processes easier to understand and remember.

  • Easy to teach and differentiate: Clear student directions, visual scaffolds, answer keys, and a step-by-step presentation make the lab easy to run, while editable and digital versions provide flexibility for different classrooms.

Downloads

How do I find my downloads?

At the top of the page click MY ACCOUNT, then click DOWNLOADS in the list on the left. A link to all of your downloads can be found there.

You will also receive an automated email after each purchase with a link to every resource, so check your inbox and your spam or junk folder. Be sure to save your purchases to your hard drive and consider backing them up.

My download has a file-path error and will not open!

This is usually a character-length problem that happens when files sit in the Downloads folder on a PC. That folder is buried so deep on the computer that it can cause errors.

Try saving the file to My Documents instead of Downloads and see if that helps. If you are still stuck, email me and I will help you sort it out.

What types of resources do you sell?

Many resources come in both printable (PDF) and digital Google Slides™ formats. Some use Boom Learning for Boom Cards. Unless noted otherwise, please consider products non-editable.

Please read the product description to see exactly what file types you are purchasing.

Payment

What forms of payment do you accept?

You can pay by credit or debit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or direct bank transfer (ACH) through our secure checkout.

We also accept purchase orders from schools, districts, and other educational institutions. See the Purchase Orders section for details. We do not accept personal checks or money orders outside of the purchase order process.

What is your refund policy?

Because we sell digital downloads, all sales are final and no refunds or exchanges are available.

If you are unsure whether a resource is right for your students, please email me before purchasing and I will gladly answer any questions.

I want to purchase multiple licenses. How does that work?

Each teacher license provides access for one teacher. Add the number of licenses you need to your cart and check out as normal.

Then email me with your order number and the name and email address of each additional teacher, and I will set up an account and access for each of them.

Am I responsible for sales tax?

Sales tax is applied where required by law, based on your location.

If your school or district is tax exempt, please email me a copy of your exemption certificate before purchasing so I can adjust your order.
