Layers of the Earth Scale Model Lab

In this layers of the Earth scale model lab, students create a beautiful scale model of the Earth’s layers using register tape (or white copy paper), pencils, and a ruler. This is one of my favorite Earth science labs as it incorporates reading, writing, collecting and analyzing data, art, and metric conversions. Students love it too!

Students will first read background information Earth’s layers and then complete a data table on the properties of each layer. They then convert the given thicknesses of each layer from kilometers to centimeters (simple – just divide by 100!). Students will create colorful scale models based on the information from the conversions and add details to their model about each layer using simple and clear directions.

To summarize this Earth’s layers lab, students will answer 15 post-lab questions that are text-dependent upon the provided background reading.
