This hands-on Minerals Lab gives students practice identifying eight unknown mineral samples using luster, color, streak, hardness, cleavage or fracture, and special properties. Students collect evidence from multiple tests, then use the included Mineral Properties Chart to determine each mineral’s identity.
This is more than a basic “look at the mineral and guess” activity. Built-in reference sheets scaffold the properties of minerals and guide students through the mineral identification process step by step.
This editable mineral lab is easy to adapt to your classroom mineral kit. Teachers can choose any 8 minerals from the included chart of 20 common minerals, and students finish with analysis questions and a scaffolded CER defending one identification with evidence.

- Mineral Properties ID Chart: A one-page mineral identification chart includes 20 common minerals with luster, hardness, streak, color, cleavage or fracture, and special properties. Teachers can choose any 8 minerals from the chart to match the specimens available in their classroom kit.
- Editable Minerals Lab Procedure: Step-by-step student directions guide students through testing luster and color, streak, hardness, cleavage or fracture, and special properties such as magnetism, double refraction, feel, and marking paper. Students do not need to break or damage mineral specimens (2 pages).
- Editable Student Lab Handout: Students record observations for 8 unknown mineral samples in an organized data table, then compare their evidence with the Mineral Properties Chart to determine the best-match mineral identification.
- Analysis Questions & Mineral Identification CER: Four analysis and conclusion questions reinforce mineral properties and identification skills. Students then complete a scaffolded CER in which they defend one mineral identification using specific observations and test results as evidence (1 page).

Materials are simple—teachers only need 8 mineral samples, streak plates, a copper penny or copper plate, a glass plate, a hand lens, and a magnet.
