From debating which type of holiday tree is better for the environment to exploring the incredible adaptations of polar bears, each station offers a hands-on, interactive experience. Students will love making paper snowflakes, guessing mystery holiday scents, and even graphing daylight hours to learn about the winter solstice. Station 1: Artificial Verus Real Holiday Trees- The Great Tree Debate AND CER

In station one of these science winter holiday stations, students will take on the age-old question: Which type of holiday tree is better for the environmentโartificial or real? To find an answer, students will first read a short text outlining the pros and cons of both artificial and real trees. The reading covers various factors such as cost, reusability, carbon footprint, sustainability, and disposal. After reading, students will sort the information into a comparison table to clearly see the advantages and disadvantages of each type of tree.
Once theyโve gathered their evidence, students will complete a CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) activity. Here, theyโll make a claim about which type of tree they believe is better for the environment. Using specific evidence from the reading, theyโll support their claim and explain their reasoning, considering factors like long-term environmental impact, resource use, and sustainability. This activity challenges students to think critically about a real-world issue while learning to back up their opinions with strong evidence.
Station 2: Snowflake Science

In station two of these science winter holiday stations, students will learn about the fascinating world of snowflake formation and discover why no two snowflakes are ever exactly alike. Students will start by reading a short passage explaining how snowflakes form in the clouds when water vapor freezes around tiny particles, creating delicate, six-sided ice crystals. The reading also explores how differences in temperature and humidity give each snowflake its unique shape.
After learning about the science behind snowflakes, students will put their creativity to the test by making their own six-sided snowflake from a piece of copy paper. They can follow simple step-by-step written directions or watch a video demonstration if they prefer visual instructions. Finally, students will answer a set of text-dependent questions about the reading to reinforce their understanding of snowflake formation and the factors that make each snowflake unique. This hands-on activity combines art and science, giving students a chance to explore the wonders of winter weather.
Station 3: Diffusion of Mystery Holiday Scents

In this station three of these science winter holiday stations, students will explore the concept of diffusionโthe process by which particles spread from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. Theyโll start by reading a brief text that explains how diffusion works and why itโs essential for many processes in the human body, such as the movement of oxygen and nutrients across cell membranes.
Next, students will put their knowledge of diffusion to the test with a fun “Mystery Holiday Scent” activity. Theyโll use four sealed plastic baggies, each containing a cotton ball. Three of the baggies have cotton balls soaked in holiday scents like vanilla extract, peppermint extract, or cinnamon extract, while one baggie is a control with an unscented cotton ball. Without opening the bags, students will smell through the plastic and try to identify the scent diffusing out. The baggie acts as a semipermeable membrane, allowing the scent molecules to pass through, just as membranes do in the human body.
After completing the scent test, students will answer text-dependent questions about the reading to reinforce their understanding of diffusion, semipermeable membranes, and why diffusion is so important in biological systems. This activity gives students a hands-on way to experience diffusion in action, all while enjoying some familiar holiday aromas! This one of my favorite science winter holiday stations!
Materials: 4 baggies, 4 cotton balls, and 3 holiday scents of your choice (peppermint oil, cinnamon extract, orange extract, vanilla extract, and pine-scented oil are all great holiday choices!) Detailed directions are included in your teacher setup guide.
Station 4: Polar Bear Adaptations

In station four of these science winter holiday stations, students will explore how polar bears are perfectly adapted to survive the frigid Arctic environment. Students will start by reading a short passage about polar bear adaptations, focusing on the two main types of insulation they rely on: blubber and fur. The reading explains how a thick layer of blubber keeps polar bears warm in icy waters and how their dense fur traps heat and protects them from the cold.
Next, students will get hands-on with a blubber and fur simulation experiment to feel the difference for themselves. First, theyโll submerge their hand in icy water using an empty plastic baggie for 30 seconds to experience the cold without insulation. Then, theyโll try a “blubber glove,” made from a baggie filled with vegetable shortening, and dunk their hand into the icy water for 30 seconds. Finally, theyโll use a glove filled with cotton balls to simulate the effect of a polar bearโs fur and dip their hand in the icy water once more. Each time, theyโll compare how well each type of insulation protects against the cold.
After completing the experiment, students will answer text-dependent questions based on their reading and experience, reinforcing their understanding of how these unique adaptations help polar bears survive in extreme cold. This activity provides a memorable way for students to connect the concepts of insulation and animal adaptations with real-world examples.
Materials:
- Blubber Glove: 2 Quart-sized plastic baggies, 2 sticks or 1/2 can of vegetable shortening (such as Crisco), and duct tape (to seal) to make a blubber glove. Video and written directions included in your teacher set up guide.
- Fur Glove: 2 Quart-sized baggies, enough cotton balls to pack into a baggie, and duct tape (to seal the baggie).
- Control: 1 Quart-sized baggie. This will remain empty.
- Bowl of icy water
Station 5: Winter Solstice Graphing Activity

In station five of these science winter holiday stations, students will learn about the science behind the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, and how Earth’s tilt creates the changing seasons. Students will start by reading a brief text that explains why we have seasons, focusing on how the 23.5-degree tilt of Earthโs axis affects the amount of sunlight different parts of the planet receive throughout the year. Theyโll discover why the winter solstice marks the day with the fewest hours of daylight as well as how some ancient cultures celebrated the winter solstice.
After reading, students will use a provided data set showing the average number of daylight hours per month to create a line graph. They will plot the data points, connect them, and observe how the amount of daylight changes throughout the year. This visual representation helps students see the pattern of increasing and decreasing daylight and highlights the significance of the winter solstice.
Finally, students will answer a series of text and graph-dependent questions, using their graph and reading to explain why daylight hours vary by season and what happens after the winter solstice. This station gives students a hands-on opportunity to connect the concepts of Earth’s tilt, seasonal changes, and the importance of the winter solstice while practicing their graphing skills.
Station 6: Holiday Symbiosis

In station six of these science winter holiday stations, students will explore symbiosis, where two different organisms live closely together and interact in ways that can be beneficial, neutral, or harmful. Students will start by reading a short text introducing the three main types of symbiosis: mutualism, where both organisms benefit; commensalism, where one organism benefits without affecting the other; and parasitism, where one organism benefits at the expense of the other.
After understanding the different types of symbiotic relationships, students will dive into six holiday-themed symbiosis scenarios that showcase real-life examples of symbiosis. For each scenario, such as mistletoe growing on a tree, students will identify the type of symbiosis being described and explain their reasoning. Other scenarios may include interactions like squirrels storing food in evergreen trees (commensalism) or birds feeding on holly berries and spreading the seeds (mutualism).
This activity challenges students to apply their knowledge by classifying each relationship and encourages critical thinking as they determine why certain interactions fit specific types of symbiosis. Itโs a festive way for students to see how these biological relationships play out in nature, even during the holiday season!
