Qualitative and Quantitative Observations Lab

In this low-prep qualitative and quantitative observations lab, students will read about the difference between these two types of observations, observe random objects of your choice, collect data on these observations in a data table, and answer post-lab analysis questions. This makes the perfect back to school science lab!

This one of students’ favorite beginning of the year science activities! With a simple set up, students will practice using measuring tools and their five senses, collect data, and truly understand the difference between quantitative and qualitative observations and their significance in science.

 

QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE OBSERVATIONS LAB INCLUDES:

•  Teacher Guide and Lesson Plan:A one-page teacher’s guide and plan breaks down this lab and offers handy tips and tricks for implementing this fun lab in your classroom.

 

• Student Lab Handout (3 pages):
  • Background Reading: A 3-paragraph background reading, explaining the differences between qualitative and quantitative observations and their importance in science.

 

• • Procedure and Data Table: Students will read through a clear procedure with reminders of proper lab etiquette. They will the follow directions to make four qualitative and four quantitative observations on any six objects you provide. I just use a bundle of different stuff I find around my classroom or on school grounds – a leaf, rock, eraser, tissue box, toy car, marble, stapler – really anything! I also provide students with metric rulers and access to a classroom balance so that they can collect real scientific quantitative data on their objects.

 

• • Post-Lab Questions:
    10 meaningful short-answer questions that have the student dig deeper into the content and make reflections on this qualitative and quantitative observations lab activity are included. You will also receive an editable version of this lab, so you can change any questions that you see fit for your students.

 

LAB MATERIALS:

• Objects to Collect Data On: Small groups, pairs, or individual students are prompted to collect qualitative and quantitative data on any six objects provided by their teacher. Don’t over think this! I simply go through my classroom and grounds an find random things and place them on the front table for kids to choose from, observe, and return. Rocks, leaves, erasers and other school supplies, boxes, marbles, or whatever else you have laying around your classroom will work for this lab.

 

• Measurement Tools: Students practice their measurement skills while collecting quantitative data. Provide rulers, a classroom balance, or any other simple tools. Suggestions are included in your teacher guide.

 

• LOW PREP! Just print out the three page student handout of the qualitative and quantitative observations lab and provide materials and measurement tools for students to explore. That’s it!
