These scientific method stations give students a structured, engaging way to practice the science skills they will use throughout the school year.

Students explore each topic through short readings, hands-on tasks, card sorts, investigation scenarios, data tables, graphs, evidence analysis, and reasoning-based questions.

This scientific method stations activity includes printable station cards, student response sheets, answer keys, task cards, sorting materials, investigation sheets, a digital Google Slides version, and a text-editable version for teacher customization.

Every station includes a short background reading and is text-dependent – no prior knowledge required!

Scientific Method Stations Overview:

  • Station 1: Observations and Inferences: Students distinguish observations from inferences and analyze clues from the Case of the Missing Hissing Cockroach.

  • Station 2: Types of Observations: Students examine classroom objects and record qualitative and quantitative observations using a ruler and digital balance.

  • Station 3: Scientific Theories and Laws: Students compare theories and laws, then complete a card sort to identify characteristics of each and what they have in common.

  • Station 4: Testable Scientific Questions: Students revise weak, broad, or opinion-based questions so they include a factor to change or compare and a measurable result.

  • Station 5: Forming a Strong Hypothesis: Students use sentence strips and a sorting mat to repair weak hypotheses by identifying variables and predicting a measurable change.

  • Station 6: Scientific Variables: Students analyze four investigations and identify the independent variable, dependent variable, and controlled variables.

  • Station 7: Experimental Versus Control Groups: Students identify the experimental and control groups in four investigations and explain why a control group is important.

  • Station 8: Collecting and Organizing Data: Students use raw data and a checklist to complete a well-organized data table with headings, units, trials, and averages.

  • Station 9: Analyzing Data and Drawing Conclusions: Students analyze a yeast investigation, identify patterns in a table and graph, evaluate the hypothesis, and write a brief conclusion.

  • Station 10: Using CER to Explain Scientific Evidence: Students investigate a campsite mystery, compare clues with animal profiles, and write a claim, evidence, and reasoning response.

  • Station 11: Designing a Controlled Experiment: Students choose an experimental question and develop a brief investigation plan that includes a hypothesis, variables, comparison condition, measurements, and trials.

  • Station 12: Evaluating Reliability: Students compare three bird-feeder investigations and determine which provides the most reliable evidence based on sample size, repeated observations, and consistency.

This scientific method stations activity is a fun way to get students moving, collaborating, and applying key science practices in a variety of meaningful ways.

Super Low Prep!

  • All you need is 3-5 classroom objects, a ruler, and scale for one station (to make observations). Everything else is included!
  • With the included teacher’s guide and lesson plan, you will receive a stations overview page with each station’s overview and necessary materials needed to be placed at each station. You do not need station signage because each station card is clearly marked with the station number and name.
