Gravity Lab – Weight, Mass, and Gravity Jump Lab Activity

A fun gravity lab activity made for secondary science students! Let’s jump around! Students will learn about mass, weight, and gravity, and then calculate their weight and jump length at various locations in the solar system. This is a super fun lab that my students love and remember for years!

⭐️ This Gravity Lab is Broken Down Into 5 Different Tasks ⭐️

• Task 1 – Prep Lab: Students watch a short and fun video about mass, weight, and gravity, and answer pre-lab questions.

• Task 2 – Weight on Other Planets: Students calculate their weight using the force of gravity at various locations in the solar system. These are easy calculation – simply multiply!

• Task 3 – Jumping: This is the fun part! Students broad (frog) jump from a predetermined starting point and measure how far their average jump is on Earth.

• Task 4 – Calculating Jumps on Other Planets: Students calculate how far they can jump on other locations in the solar system. Again, simple calculations!

• Task 5 – Analysis and Conclusions: Students answer eight analysis and conclusion questions.

All the materials you need are meter sticks (1 per group), a few pieces of masking tape, and access to an electronic to make calculations and watch the video. I like to play old school music during this lab – like Kris Kross!
