Description

Students will learn about and model the phases of mitosis, interphase, and cytokinesis using sandwich cookies (Oreos), sprinkles, and red candies (Red Hots) in this fun and edible mitosis lab. Students will read and learn about the processes of cell division and then apply that knowledge to model the processes using cookies, sprinkles, and candy.

Students will answer pre-lab, intra-lab, and post-lab questions during this activity. Students will produce a complete edible model of mitosis, sketch the phases of cell division, and answer questions about the processes that are occurring during each stage. A detailed lesson plan with objectives, materials, pacing, and procedure is included. Also included is a full answer key in PDF format and in an attractive and presentable PowerPoint format to review the lab and lab answers with your students in sequential order. A PDF version and Google Slides version (of student sheets) are included in your download.

Low prep and easy to follow – this lab is sure to be a hit in your classroom! All you need are 7 cookies, 12 red candies, a small handful of multicolored sprinkles, and toothpicks or tweezers (for sprinkle manipulation) per group. If you don’t want to use candy, you can use any small objects or simply have your students draw and color each phase.
