The Breakdown:
– Students read the engaging and informative science literacy article about the eight characteristics of life, viruses, and how viruses may or may not have each characteristic of life. The article is laid out with an introduction to the discovery of viruses, what viruses are and what they are made up of, in-depth explanations of each characteristic of life, and explanation of how a virus may have or not have each characteristic.
– After the reading, students answer 20 open-ended Reading Comprehension Questions. To save paper, appropriate spacing and room to write answers is provided on 1-page.
– A supplementary and included Venn Diagram activity can then be used as practice for lower-level learners or elaboration for high-level learners. The digital version includes a drop and drag word bank.
– Students then decide for themselves if they believe if viruses are alive or not, and back up their claim with reasoning and evidence using a 1-page CER graphic organizer.
– Finally, students can use their CER Characteristics of Life and Viruses graphic organizer to complete an essay using the 1-page elaborate, yet easy-to-follow, CER Rubric to help them form the perfect CER Essay.
