Description

What is anaerobic alcoholic fermentation? How is the amount of carbon dioxide produced by yeast during cellular respiration affected by the temperature of the yeast’s environment? This cell respiration and fermentation lab is sure to be a hit in your secondary science classroom! This lab includes an editable version, digital version, full lesson plan, rubric, and more! Students will use balloons, yeast, sugar, and water to compare the rate of alcoholic fermentation in room temperature and warm conditions.

Lab Overview

First students will read a background reading about yeast and cell respiration. Students will then experiment, collect, and analyze data on how temperature affects anaerobic cellular fermentation. They will study yeast and a sugar solution in a closed system (balloon and container) and measure the amount of carbon dioxide released during cellular respiration. Students will compare the difference in rate and release between two different environments (hot water bath versus room temperature water).

The cellular respiration lab student handout consists of background reading, pre-lab questions, hypothesis making, variable and control identification, data tables, graphing, and analysis and conclusion questions.

This cell respiration lab will take 2-3 class periods to complete

-Day One: Background Reading and Pre-Lab Questions, Hypothesis, and Room Temperature Yeast Experiment
*Alternately, you could assign pre-lab questions and background reading the day before to save time.

-Day Two: High Temperature Yeast Experiment, Graphing, and Conclusion
